Lagos Assures Seamless Traffic Flow as 64-Day Rehabilitation Begins on Lekki–Epe Expressway
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Lagos State Government has assured motorists of effective and uninterrupted traffic management as rehabilitation works commence on a 20-kilometre stretch of the Lekki–Epe Expressway, a project scheduled to last 64 days.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, gave the assurance on Tuesday while addressing officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
He said the government had put in place comprehensive and well-coordinated traffic control measures to minimise disruption and ensure public safety throughout the construction period.
Giwa clarified that the rehabilitation would not involve the closure of the expressway, explaining that traffic interventions would be strategically concentrated at critical intersections along the corridor to sustain smooth vehicular movement.
According to him, the traffic management plan has been designed and implemented in structured phases, with more than 305 LASTMA operatives deployed to reinforce operations across the three existing traffic management zones covering the axis.
He said the expanded deployment is aimed at guaranteeing free flow of traffic, enabling rapid response to incidents and ensuring strict enforcement of traffic regulations in order to maintain order and road safety.
The Special Adviser noted the sharp increase in vehicular traffic and commercial haulage along the Lekki–Epe corridor, attributing it to the presence of major economic and infrastructural assets such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Dangote Refinery and other rapidly growing commercial and industrial developments in the area.
To address potential traffic-related emergencies, Giwa disclosed that LASTMA has positioned a range of high-, medium- and low-capacity recovery vehicles, including tow trucks, to ensure the prompt removal of broken-down vehicles and prevent secondary congestion.
He added that the agency would deploy drone technology for real-time aerial surveillance to enhance the swift detection, assessment and resolution of traffic incidents along the Lekki–Epe Expressway and other strategic locations across the state.
Giwa further stated that the traffic management framework includes the installation of clear directional signage, improved illumination and other safety features to guide motorists during the rehabilitation period.
He also confirmed the deployment of personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force to support LASTMA operations, strengthen security and safeguard lives and property throughout the project.
Motorists were advised to make use of alternative routes provided by the government to ease pressure on the construction corridor. Giwa identified the Coaster Road linking Ogombo to Abraham Adesanya as a recommended alternative during the rehabilitation works.
He urged road users to remain patient, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate fully with traffic officers on duty, stressing that collective discipline and cooperation are critical to the success of the project and the effectiveness of the traffic management measures.
Members of the public were also encouraged to promptly report traffic-related incidents through the LASTMA toll-free hotline, 0800 005 27862, with assurances of swift and professional response.
The Lagos State Government appealed for the understanding and cooperation of motorists and residents as it undertakes the rehabilitation project, describing it as a critical investment aimed at improving mobility, enhancing public safety and supporting sustainable economic growth.
