Lagos Approves 13% Fare Increase for BRT, BRI Bus Services

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard bus routes.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, noting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the approval following appeals from regulated public transport operators.

According to LAMATA, the new fare structure will take effect from March 2, 2026. The agency explained that the adjustment is aimed at cushioning the impact of sustained economic challenges affecting public transport operations in the state.

“The review is also in line with the previously approved annual fare review mechanism,” the statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, said.

Officials cited persistent inflationary pressures as a major factor behind the decision, noting that Nigeria’s inflation rate closed at 15.2 per cent at the end of 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

The government added that Bus Operating Companies (BOCs) have been grappling with rising operational costs, including vehicle maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries, particularly following the implementation of the new national minimum wage.

LAMATA also stated that operators are investing in newer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient buses to enhance passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.

While announcing the increase, the state government reassured commuters of its commitment to balancing affordability with the provision of safe, reliable and efficient public transportation services across Lagos.
