Federal Road Project In Enugu Communities Nears Commissioning

A 2.5-kilometre road project initiated by the Nigerian Government in three communities in Igbo Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State is set for commissioning.

The Commissioner representing Enugu State at the Federal Character Commission, Peter Eze, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja.

Eze said the road, which links Aji, Isiugwu and Ufodo communities, will improve connectivity, enhance access to farms, schools and markets, and boost socio-economic activities.

He said that “the project will also link the communities to neighbouring Kogi State, improving transportation and opening up the area for further development.”

According to him, the project is at an advanced stage, with asphalt laying expected to commence soon ahead of commissioning.

Eze noted that the road is being constructed with proper drainage systems to ensure durability and address erosion challenges.

He explained that “the project aligns with ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure at the grassroots and improve rural access.”

The Commissioner said the project was facilitated through government channels to attract federal support to the area.

He emphasised that improved road infrastructure remains key to economic growth, noting that better connectivity would enhance livelihoods and stimulate development in rural communities.

Residents of the benefiting communities have welcomed the project, describing it as timely in addressing longstanding challenges of poor road access affecting farmers and traders.

Eze also commended the scholarship programme of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), describing it as impactful and increasingly inclusive, especially for the South-East region.

He observed a marked increase in participation from the region, noting that the high turnout of applicants in recent screenings reflects growing trust in the scheme’s transparency.

According to him, the increased involvement signals a shift from previous trends where the region recorded lower participation, stressing that the development positions the South-East to benefit more from federal opportunities.

On oversight of government institutions, Eze said the commission has intensified engagement with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), warning that non-compliance with federal character principles would attract sanctions, including possible legal action.
