Oyetola, Maritime Stakeholders To Discuss Green Port Operations At SCAN Dockworkers’ Day

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, alongside key stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime sector, is expected to participate in the 2026 Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) Dockworkers’ Day scheduled for June 4 in Apapa, Lagos.

The event, which will hold at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, is themed “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers” and is expected to focus on environmentally sustainable port operations, improved welfare for dockworkers, and the adoption of modern technologies in maritime activities.

Other notable participants expected at the event include the immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Adewale Adeyanju, and the President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS), Aminu Umar.

According to a joint statement issued by SCAN President, Moses Ebosele, and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Yusuf Babalola, the annual Dockworkers’ Day remains an important platform for recognising the contribution of dockworkers to Nigeria’s economy while addressing pressing challenges facing the maritime industry.

The organisers stated that the programme aims to align Nigeria’s port operations with global environmental standards and ensure dockworkers are adequately prepared for the transition to greener and technology-driven maritime systems.

They noted that discussions at the event would centre on sustainable port practices, operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and the need to equip dockworkers with the necessary skills to adapt to evolving global shipping standards.

“SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports,” the statement said.

The organisers further explained that the global maritime industry is rapidly evolving, making it necessary for dockworkers to embrace digital transformation and green initiatives within port environments.

Aminu Umar is expected to deliver the keynote address, while Adewale Adeyanju, who also serves as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), will chair the occasion.

Goodwill messages are also expected from the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), and the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), among other maritime stakeholders.
