Lekki Port Strengthens Global Trade Connectivity With HMM-ONE Alliance Service

LAGOS — Lekki Port has recorded another milestone in its drive to strengthen Nigeria’s position in global maritime trade with the successful maiden call of the HMM–ONE Alliance service at the Lekki Deep Seaport.

The vessel call follows the launch of the Mediterranean West Africa Service (MA2), a new container shipping route jointly operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Ocean Network Express (ONE). The service connects major ports across Europe and West Africa, expanding the reach of both global shipping lines to Lekki Port.

The development is expected to improve trade opportunities for Nigerian importers and exporters by enhancing connectivity with international markets, facilitating faster cargo movement, and supporting more efficient supply chains.

It also aligns with ongoing efforts to boost Nigeria’s maritime competitiveness through increased direct vessel calls and the use of modern port infrastructure.

Managing Director of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang, described the maiden call as a significant endorsement of the port’s growing role in global shipping and logistics.

According to him, the inclusion of Lekki Port in the Mediterranean West Africa Service reflects the confidence leading international shipping companies have in the port’s world-class infrastructure and operational efficiency.

He noted that the new service would broaden trade opportunities for customers, strengthen Nigeria’s access to key global markets, and advance the port’s vision of becoming the leading trade and logistics gateway in West Africa.

Qiang added that Lekki Port’s deep draught, modern facilities, and efficient operations position it to accommodate larger cargo volumes while meeting the evolving demands of the global shipping industry.

Industry observers say the addition of the MA2 service further reinforces Lekki Port’s strategic importance on international shipping routes and supports Nigeria’s ambition to emerge as a leading maritime and trade hub in the West African region.
