FG Backs Sokoto’s Caliphate Airlines, Eyes August Launch
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting indigenous airlines as the Sokoto State Government moves to launch Caliphate Airlines, a new commercial carrier expected to begin operations in August.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, gave the assurance during a meeting with a Sokoto State delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Aminu Dikko, according to a statement issued by the Minister’s Media Aide, Tunde Moshood.
The delegation included Secretary to the State Government, Mohammad Bello Sifawa, Director of Operations of Caliphate Airlines, Capt. Oluwashina Agbelese, and Account Manager, Capt. Abdulkarim Abioye.
Speaking during the visit, Dikko disclosed that Caliphate Airlines, established as a limited liability company to provide domestic passenger and cargo services, is scheduled to be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on August 18, 2026.
He thanked the Minister for his support throughout the airline’s development and appealed for continued assistance in facilitating the timely issuance of the Airline Operator Certificate (AOC), which is required for the commencement of commercial operations.
Providing an update on the airline’s readiness, Agbelese said the carrier would commence operations with a fleet of five regional jets, comprising three Embraer ERJ-145LR aircraft and two Embraer 190-100 series aircraft.
He noted that two of the aircraft have already arrived in Nigeria, while the remaining three are expected before the official launch.
According to him, the airline’s initial route network will connect Sokoto, Abuja and Kano, with plans to expand to additional domestic destinations as operations grow.
In his response, Keyamo commended the Sokoto State Government for investing in the aviation sector, describing the initiative as a boost to economic development, regional connectivity and job creation.
He assured the delegation that the Federal Government would support genuine investors in the aviation industry while ensuring that all regulatory processes are completed professionally and in line with safety requirements.
The Minister said every effort would be made to address any issues that could delay the airline’s commencement of operations without compromising regulatory standards.
He added that the successful launch of Caliphate Airlines would improve air connectivity in the North-West and contribute to the Federal Government’s broader objective of strengthening domestic air transport, stimulating economic activities and creating employment opportunities.
