FRSC, India Partner To Train Nigerian Law Enforcement Officers On Stress Management

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in collaboration with India’s Rashtriya Raksha University, has commenced a five-day international workshop aimed at strengthening stress management, psychological resilience and emotional well-being among law enforcement officers in Nigeria.

The workshop, which began on Monday at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja, brought together personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the FRSC.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the increasing demands placed on law enforcement personnel had made psychological and emotional well-being essential to operational effectiveness.

Mohammed noted that officers were routinely exposed to traumatic incidents, road crashes, emergencies, disasters, security challenges and other critical situations capable of placing significant psychological pressure on them.

He said while law enforcement agencies had traditionally focused on technical and operational competencies, experience had shown that sustainable effectiveness also depended on the mental and emotional well-being of personnel.

According to him, poorly managed stress could affect officers’ judgement, decision-making, interpersonal relationships, productivity and overall operational performance.

The Corps Marshal said strengthening the psychological resilience of law enforcement officers had therefore become a strategic necessity.

He explained that the partnership with Rashtriya Raksha University was part of efforts towards the adoption of a Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions.

Mohammed said the workshop would expose Nigerian law enforcement personnel to global best practices in stress management, emotional regulation, psychological resilience, self-management and peer support.

He added that the skills acquired would not only promote officers’ personal well-being but also enhance professionalism, casualty handling, emergency response and service delivery.

Also speaking, India’s Defence Adviser and representative of the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Colonel Manoj Singh, said the programme was designed to improve the safety, resilience and effectiveness of officers working in highly demanding environments.

Singh described the initiative as a product of growing cooperation between Nigeria and India, stressing the importance of equipping law enforcement personnel with the knowledge and skills required to manage occupational stress and emotional pressures.

The training is expected to strengthen the capacity of participating officers to cope with the psychological demands of their duties while improving their overall operational effectiveness.
