168 Solar Streetlights Removed, Longbridge Plunged Into Darkness

The Longbridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been thrown into darkness following the reported vandalisation and removal of 168 solar-powered streetlights installed along the busy corridor.

The affected infrastructure covers an estimated five-kilometre stretch of the expressway and was installed to improve visibility and enhance the safety of motorists travelling between Lagos and Ogun states, particularly at night.

A recent inspection reportedly revealed that the lighting points had been stripped of their poles, solar panels and other components. Several sections of the bridge were left without functional lights, with multiple consecutive installations removed in some areas.

The vandalism has raised fresh concerns among motorists and other road users, especially those whose vehicles may break down or become immobilised on the expressway at night.

Motorists have warned that the poorly illuminated sections could make it harder to identify obstacles and potentially expose stranded commuters to criminal attacks.

A commuter identified as Segun described the development as disturbing, saying the scale of the vandalism suggested that the streetlights were removed systematically.

The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Richard Adeleye, reportedly confirmed the vandalism and said security agencies had commenced efforts to identify those responsible.

Some suspects allegedly caught vandalising the infrastructure have reportedly been arrested and taken through legal proceedings.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger protection of public infrastructure along major highways, including increased security patrols and surveillance around vulnerable installations.

Stakeholders have also called for tighter regulation of the scrap-metal trade, noting that stolen public infrastructure could be dismantled and sold through informal scrap markets.

Beyond the cost of replacing the stolen equipment, the vandalism could undermine ongoing efforts to improve road safety and security along one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations and take measures to restore lighting along the affected section, while motorists have been advised to exercise caution when travelling through the area at night.
