LASTMA Rescues Suspected Drunk Driver in Early-Morning Ebute-Ero Crash, Issues Renewed Warning on Drink-Driving
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a serious road traffic crash involving a suspected drunk driver at Ebute-Ero inward NEPA, Apongbon, in the early hours of today.
According to preliminary findings, a male motorist driving a Honda SUV with registration number FKJ 562 JF was allegedly operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and at an excessive speed when he lost control while descending the bridge.
The vehicle subsequently rammed into the rear of a moving Scania truck, resulting in a violent collision that left the driver critically trapped in the wreckage.
LASTMA rescue officials promptly responded to the distress call and carried out a delicate emergency extraction of the trapped driver. The injured motorist was immediately handed over to security operatives and conveyed to a nearby medical facility for urgent medical attention.
To prevent secondary accidents and ensure the safety of other road users, LASTMA officers swiftly secured the accident scene, cordoned off the affected area and effectively managed traffic flow along the busy corridor, leading to the restoration of order.
Personnel from the Ebute-Ero Police Division provided security support throughout the rescue, traffic control and recovery operations, ensuring a coordinated and seamless intervention.
Following the rescue, LASTMA’s recovery team evacuated both the Honda SUV and the Scania truck from the roadway. The vehicles were subsequently handed over to the appropriate security authorities for further investigation and legal procedures.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed concern over what he described as an entirely avoidable crash. While wishing the injured driver a speedy recovery, he strongly condemned the reckless behaviour that led to the incident.
Hon. Giwa reiterated the Lagos State Government’s consistent warnings against driving under the influence of alcohol, describing drink-driving as one of the deadliest forms of road indiscipline. He stressed that such conduct not only endangers the life of the driver but also exposes other innocent road users to serious risk.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the enforcement of traffic regulations and sustaining efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.
LASTMA has once again urged motorists to strictly comply with traffic laws, exercise caution and responsibility behind the wheel, and completely abstain from alcohol consumption before driving, warning that drinking and driving remains a major cause of fatal road crashes.
