FRSC Urges Inclusion Of Bicycle Lanes In Road Projects
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged governments at all levels, town planners, and development partners to incorporate bicycle lanes into road construction projects to promote safer and more cycling-friendly communities across the country.
The Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the flag-off of the 2026 United Nations World Bicycle Day celebration.
Represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal, Clement Oladele, Mohammed said promoting cycling goes beyond transportation, describing it as an investment in public health and environmental sustainability.
He noted that the FRSC recognises that safe cycling depends on adequate infrastructure and responsible conduct by all road users.
According to him, the Corps is intensifying advocacy for the provision of protected bicycle lanes while promoting a culture of shared road use among motorists and cyclists.
“Every trip made by bicycle contributes to reducing traffic congestion and harmful emissions. Cycling also improves physical health and provides affordable mobility for students, traders and low-income earners,” he said.
The Corps Marshal assured that the FRSC would continue to promote cycling through sustained public enlightenment campaigns aimed at improving cyclists’ visibility and safety on the roads.
He also urged cyclists to ride responsibly, obey traffic regulations and serve as ambassadors of safer and environmentally friendly transportation.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Boosting Urban Life with the Bicycle,” underscores the critical role cycling can play in addressing traffic congestion, environmental pollution, road crashes and sedentary lifestyles in rapidly expanding cities.
Represented by Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike, Dongban-Mensem commended the United Nations for dedicating a day each year to promote awareness of the benefits of cycling.
She called on relevant stakeholders to support the implementation of the National Cycling Policy to enhance sustainable urban mobility.
Representatives of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and other cyclists’ associations, in their goodwill messages, pledged support for initiatives promoting bicycle riding as a cost-effective means of transportation, particularly in rural communities.
The annual World Bicycle Day celebration is observed globally to highlight the social, economic, environmental and health benefits of cycling and to encourage safer and more sustainable transport systems.
