NAIC Partners Transport Unions On Passenger Accident Insurance Scheme

The Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) has announced plans to introduce a Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme in collaboration with transport unions to provide financial protection for commuters involved in road traffic accidents across the country.

The initiative was unveiled during a meeting at the corporation’s headquarters in Abuja, where the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NAIC, Hon. Yazid Shehu Danfulani.

According to a statement issued by NAIC’s Manager of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Lawal Umar Maradun, the proposed scheme is being developed in partnership with the NURTW and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to complement the Federal Government’s efforts to improve road safety and strengthen social protection.

Danfulani described the insurance programme as a strategic intervention designed to reduce the financial burden on victims of road traffic accidents and their families.

He noted that approximately 32,000 commuters sustain injuries annually, while an estimated 5,200 people lose their lives each year in road crashes across Nigeria.

“The proposed Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme is a strategic intervention designed to reduce the financial burden on victims of road traffic accidents and their families,” he said.

He explained that the insurance cover would provide financial relief to accident victims and the families of those who lose their lives, helping to cushion the economic impact of injuries and fatalities.

The NAIC chief reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to developing innovative insurance products that address national challenges while promoting the welfare and security of Nigerians.

Representatives of the NURTW, NARTO and the project’s consultant pledged their support for the successful implementation of the initiative, expressing confidence that the partnership would enhance road safety, strengthen social protection and provide greater financial security for millions of commuters.

The meeting also featured a presentation on the implementation roadmap for the proposed Passenger Group Accident Insurance Scheme, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the initiative would deliver lasting benefits to road users nationwide.
