Three Killed, Three Injured In Crash On Sagamu-Benin Expressway

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

Three persons have been confirmed dead while three others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash involving a truck and a crane along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident occurred at about 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, a few metres before the Babcock University Junction in Ikenne Local Government Area.

According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, the PRO of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the crash involved a white Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number LG 59 BLF and a yellow crane without a registration number.

Eyewitnesses reportedly told emergency responders that the crane was travelling against traffic at excessive speed when it collided head-on with the oncoming truck.

TRACE said six occupants were involved in the crash, comprising three males and three females. Three male victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, while three others—two males and one female—lost their lives.

The injured victims were rescued and taken to Babcock University Teaching Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OSUTH) morgue in Sagamu by the police.

Emergency responders from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police worked to manage the scene, divert traffic and clear the wreckage. Traffic was diverted at Delabo Junction to the second carriageway while evacuation operations continued.

TRACE, FRSC and the Police commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to refrain from driving against traffic and other traffic violations, warning that such dangerous practices often result in avoidable loss of lives.
