Kaduna Police Order Probe Into Alleged Extortion Of Motorists, Cyclists

The Kaduna State Police Command has ordered an investigation into allegations that some of its officers were extorting money from motorists and commercial motorcycle operators during stop-and-search operations in the state.

The directive followed a viral video circulating on social media, which showed some police officers allegedly stopping motorists and cyclists and collecting money from them.

In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, had ordered that the officers involved be identified and invited for a full-scale investigation.

Hassan said any officer found culpable would be appropriately sanctioned.

According to him, routine roadblocks and stop-and-search operations had been curtailed, except where there is credible intelligence indicating the movement of criminals, arms or other prohibited items.

He, however, explained that the location featured in the video had previously been used by criminal elements, noting that it is a suburb of Millennium City.

He added that police operatives had previously recovered 20 AK-47 rifles along the same route.

Despite the security concerns in the area, the commissioner warned that no police officer was authorised to use legitimate security duties as an avenue for extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct.

Hassan said officers found guilty of such offences would face severe disciplinary and legal action.

The command commended members of the public for remaining vigilant and urged residents to report cases of unprofessional conduct by police officers.
