Electrical Fault Triggers Fire At Abuja Train Station, Abuja-Kaduna Services Unaffected

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

A minor fire incident occurred at the Idu Train Station in Abuja on Wednesday evening following an electrical fault in the station’s low-voltage electrical room, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has said.

The incident, which was detected at about 8:30 p.m. on September 9, 2026, was quickly brought under control by maintenance personnel, according to a statement issued by the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu.

Preliminary inspection revealed that some electrical supply cables connected to the station’s control panels were damaged in the incident.

The NRC, however, assured passengers and members of the public that the incident did not affect train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route.

“Importantly, the incident has no effect on Abuja-Kaduna Train Service operations, and scheduled train services will continue as normal,” the corporation said.

The NRC also disclosed that the station’s alternative solar power system was not affected by the incident.

It added that power had been temporarily restored to the station’s lifts and escalators, with five of the six facilities currently operational.

The corporation said its technical team was conducting a further assessment to establish the precise cause of the electrical fault and undertake permanent repairs to the affected installations.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has also been notified and requested to provide the necessary technical support and intervention.

The NRC urged passengers and the public not to panic, stressing that the incident had been contained and that scheduled Abuja-Kaduna train services would continue without disruption.
