Container Truck Rams Into Six Vehicles On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A 40-foot container truck has crashed into six vehicles at Kara Bridge, inward OPIC, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirming that no life was lost and no injury was recorded.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after the container truck, which had no registration number, reportedly developed a mechanical fault while in motion and subsequently lost control before colliding with the other vehicles.

According to LASEMA, its LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 was alerted to the incident through a distress call and was dispatched to the scene at about 6:05am.

The agency, in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the emergency team arrived within the projected response time and immediately activated its incident management protocol to coordinate the rescue and recovery operation.

LASEMA said a total of seven vehicles were involved in the crash. They included the container truck, a white Toyota Hilux with registration number BDG-422XY, a white interstate bus marked GBY 784XY, a Hyundai Odyssey with registration number AAA 48BP, a Sienna without a registration number, a Toyota Highlander marked EKY 491HB and a Mitsubishi Hilux with registration number JJJ 977JT.

The agency said its personnel worked alongside officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force to manage traffic around the accident scene and prevent further incidents.

“With the support of private towing trucks, coordinated recovery operations were carried out and all affected vehicles were successfully evacuated from the carriageway to the roadside,” LASEMA said.

Following the recovery operation, traffic movement on the bridge was restored, while LASTMA officials remained at the location to monitor the situation and ensure that the roadway remained free of obstruction.

The recovered vehicles were subsequently handed over to the police officer stationed at the scene for documentation and further necessary action.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended the LASEMA response team, LASTMA officials and the police for their prompt intervention and effective coordination, saying their swift response helped prevent casualties and facilitate the restoration of traffic.

He reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to protecting lives and property through investment in emergency response infrastructure, personnel training and the decentralisation of emergency response units across the state.

The LASEMA Permanent Secretary also advised motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, comply with roadworthiness requirements and exercise caution while travelling on major highways.
