FHA Expands Festac Road Reconstruction As Residents Welcome Progress

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has expanded the reconstruction of major roads in Festac Town, Lagos, with residents expressing optimism over the ongoing rehabilitation aimed at improving mobility and addressing years of infrastructure decay.

The project, being executed in partnership with the Lagos State Government and the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, forms part of a phased programme designed to improve road infrastructure, strengthen drainage systems and reduce flooding across the estate.

The current phase covers sections of 2nd and 7th Avenues, including the 3.2-kilometre stretch of 2nd Avenue, under an 18-month reconstruction plan.
Construction activities are also underway on sections of 7th Avenue and Agboju Market Road, where drainage channels are being rebuilt alongside road resurfacing to improve stormwater management and traffic flow.

The FHA had earlier completed the reconstruction of the First Gate, 1st Avenue and 5th Avenue, with solar-powered streetlights installed along parts of the rehabilitated routes to improve security and accessibility.

A visit to the project site by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday showed contractors carrying out excavation, grading and asphalt-laying works, while drainage infrastructure was also being installed across the affected roads.

Although traffic was slowed by diversions and construction barriers, some sections of the roads have already been asphalted, with work continuing on other stretches.

The rehabilitation comes after years of deterioration caused by poor maintenance, rapid population growth and prolonged ownership disputes between the federal and Lagos State governments. The situation had weakened drainage systems, worsened flooding and left several roads riddled with potholes.

The road network serves thousands of residents daily, providing access to businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and other major routes within Lagos.

Residents and motorists have welcomed the project, describing it as long overdue.
A commercial bus driver, Chinedu Okafor, said the poor state of the roads had increased travel time and vehicle maintenance costs.

“We spent more time navigating potholes than driving. The temporary inconvenience is worth it if the work is completed on schedule,” he said.

Another resident, Chioma Dike, said the rehabilitation would improve movement within the estate and support business activities, particularly during the rainy season.

She urged the authorities to ensure the project is completed to a high standard.

Similarly, John Okafor called on contractors to sustain the pace of work while minimising disruptions to traffic and commercial activities.

Residents expressed hope that the reconstruction would be completed within schedule, improving connectivity, enhancing road safety, reducing travel time and boosting economic activities across Festac Town.
