Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway To Experience Partial Closure For Four-Week Rehabilitation

The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to allow the Federal Ministry of Works carry out urgent rehabilitation on deteriorated sections of the road.

The disclosure was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who said the repair works would focus on the stretch between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate, affecting both directions of traffic.

According to Osiyemi, the rehabilitation exercise is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 11, and will last until Wednesday, March 11, spanning four weeks. He explained that the project would be implemented in two phases to reduce traffic congestion along the corridor.

The first phase will cover Abeokuta-bound traffic, from U-Turn Bus Stop inward Sango Tollgate, and will run from February 11 to March 4. During this period, vehicles heading towards Abeokuta from Lagos and Abule-Egba will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, about 20 metres away from the active construction zone. Traffic will return to normal flow after passing the work area.

Osiyemi noted that rehabilitation would be carried out one lane at a time. Once one section is completed, traffic will be redirected to the rehabilitated portion while work continues on the remaining lane. He added that motorists travelling towards Lagos will experience free-flowing traffic throughout the first phase.

The second phase, which will affect Lagos-bound traffic, is scheduled for March 4 to March 11 and will cover the Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction axis. During this stage, vehicles heading from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate towards Lagos and Abule-Egba will be diverted to one side of the road, with traffic restored to full access beyond the construction area.

Similar to the first phase, work will be executed in sections, with traffic redirected to completed portions as construction progresses. Abeokuta-bound motorists will continue to enjoy uninterrupted movement during this phase.
The commissioner assured road users that adequate traffic management arrangements would be put in place throughout the duration of the project. He urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time, adhere to traffic signs, and cooperate with traffic officials.

Osiyemi appealed for patience and understanding from the public, noting that the rehabilitation works are necessary to improve safety and driving conditions on the expressway.
