Lagos Acquires New 24-car Trains To Boost Red Line Rail Capacity

In what is expected to boost the operations of its Red Line rail system, the Lagos State Government has announced the arrival of new set of 24-car trains in the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed this on his verified social media handle on Thursday, saying this will improve the capacity of the Red Line rail.

“We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians,” the governor said.

He noted that his administration remains focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone, adding, “That is still our goal.

The Lagos Red Line Rail, which is one of the seven rail lines planned for Nigeria’s most vibrant commercial city and economic hub, was inaugurated on February 29, 2024, with full passenger operations commencing October 15, 2024.

The standard-gauge corridor spans 37 kilometres from Agbado to Marina, with about 27 kilometres currently operational between Agbado and Oyingbo.

Designed to ease pressure on Lagos’ road network, the rail system is projected to move up to 500,000 passengers daily at full capacity, positioning it as a major intervention in the state’s mass transit infrastructure.

It is the second of the seven planned rail lines so far launched, the first being the 27km Blue Line system, which first phase, spanning Marina on Lagos Island and Mile-2 on the Mainland, is already operational.
