LAWMA to Prosecute Three Suspects Over Attack on Enforcement Officers

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced plans to prosecute three suspects arrested for allegedly attacking its enforcement officers and personnel of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) during a joint enforcement operation along Agboju Old Lagos Road.

According to the Authority, the suspects were apprehended during a routine statutory exercise aimed at curbing illegal cart-pushing and indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the highway—activities that violate Lagos State environmental sanitation and public order regulations.

LAWMA expressed concern over what it described as recurring attacks and threats against its officers while carrying out lawful duties, noting that such actions undermine public order and environmental governance in the state.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said enforcement officers are deployed to protect public health, uphold environmental standards, and ensure compliance with waste management laws to maintain a clean and safe city.

He warned that any form of violence, harassment, intimidation or obstruction against government officials in the course of their duties would be met with firm legal action.

Dr. Gbadegesin added that the enforcement operation was carried out in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, stressing that the suspects would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law to deter similar acts.

He urged Lagos residents to cooperate with LAWMA and KAI operatives, comply with approved waste disposal guidelines, and report environmental violations through appropriate channels rather than resorting to confrontation.

The LAWMA boss also called on community leaders, market associations, transport unions and other stakeholders to support government efforts aimed at promoting environmental discipline, public safety and civic responsibility across the state.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to firm but fair enforcement, sustained public enlightenment, and the protection of its personnel, while pledging to continue working towards a cleaner, healthier and more liveable Lagos.
