Nigerian Press Must Build, Not Destroy – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian journalists to maintain high standards of professionalism, stressing that a free but responsible press is essential for national unity and democratic growth. Speaking at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Annual Conference, themed “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors,” Tinubu reflected on the historic role of the press in fighting colonial injustice and sustaining hope during military rule.

He emphasized that freedom must be exercised responsibly, with integrity guiding public discourse. Editors, he said, shape narratives, influence public understanding, and set the national agenda. While encouraging debate, Tinubu warned that disagreements should not undermine national cohesion and urged constructive criticism over cynicism.

Addressing the challenge of misinformation in the social media era, he stressed verification, balance, and professional judgment, urging journalists to “report boldly, but truthfully.” Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security, economic stability, and creating opportunities, noting that nation-building requires cooperation among government, private sector, civil society, and the media.

Concluding, he said: “The stories we tell ourselves as a nation shape the country we become. Distinguished editors, your work matters. Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair.”
