OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Rotary Club of Lekki Novare, District 9112, has commissioned a borehole water system and overhead storage tank at Okun-Ajah Community Senior Secondary School in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos, in a move aimed at improving access to clean water and enhancing the learning environment.

The project, executed on March 12, 2026, also included a tree-planting initiative designed to promote environmental sustainability within the school community.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Club President, Rotarian Amaka Ogboh, said the intervention was driven by the need to address persistent water shortages that had affected sanitation and hygiene in the school.

“For several years, the school community struggled with inadequate water supply, which impacted sanitation, hygiene, and the overall learning environment. This project provides a sustainable solution through the drilling of a borehole and installation of an overhead tank to ensure steady water access,” she said.

Ogboh noted that the tree-planting exercise was equally significant, describing it as a step toward building environmental consciousness among students. “These trees symbolize growth and responsibility, inspiring students to value nature and commit to a greener future,” she added.

The project was carried out in collaboration with the Interact Club of Lekki Novare, providing an opportunity for young members to actively participate in community service.

The initiative aligns with Rotary International’s focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), one of its key areas aimed at improving access to safe water and promoting healthier communities.

In her remarks, the school principal, Bridget Ngozi Oyedele, expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club for what she described as a timely intervention. She noted that the provision of a reliable water source would significantly improve sanitation, hygiene, and the overall well-being of both students and staff.

Also speaking, the Senior Prefect, Emmanuel Adewoye, thanked the Rotary Club and the Interact Club for their support, describing the gesture as a demonstration of genuine concern for the welfare of the school community.

The Interact Club Coordinator, Joy Akinwande, commended the partnership between both clubs, noting that the project offered young leaders a platform to engage in impactful service.

Other members of the Rotary Club present at the event, including the Project Service Chairman, Chinelo Okonkwo, reaffirmed the club’s commitment to community development, emphasizing that such initiatives reflect Rotary’s guiding principle of “Service Above Self.”

With the completion of the project, the school now enjoys improved access to clean water, creating a healthier and more conducive environment for learning. The Rotary Club of Lekki Novare reiterated its commitment to initiating projects that address critical community needs and improve quality of life.

In a letter of appreciation, the school management, on behalf of staff, students, and parents, expressed gratitude to the club for its impactful contribution to the development of the institution.
