Uber Shuts Down Operations In Nigeria

Uber has announced the end of its operations in Nigeria, with the ride-hailing company saying it will cease providing services in the country effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The company disclosed the decision in a message to its drivers, informing them that they would no longer receive requests for passenger trips through the Uber app from the effective date.

Uber described the decision as a difficult one and thanked its drivers for their contributions to the company’s operations in Nigeria over the years.

The company said, “We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026. From this date, you will no longer be able to receive rider trip requests through the Uber app.”

Uber also acknowledged the role of its drivers in providing transportation services to Nigerians, noting that their commitment had helped keep cities moving safely and affordably.

The company said it was proud of the impact its platform had made in Nigeria, describing its service as a technology platform that connected riders with independent drivers.

However, Uber did not disclose specific reasons for its decision to withdraw from the Nigerian market in the notice sent to drivers.

The company added that its Help Centre would remain available to drivers until September 24, 2026, to address questions relating to the shutdown.

The development marks the end of Uber’s operations in Nigeria and represents a significant change in the country’s ride-hailing sector, where app-based transportation services have become an important part of urban mobility.
