NCAA Launches SMS Pro Platform To Boost Aviation Safety In Nigeria
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has inaugurated the Safety Management System (SMS) Pro platform as part of efforts to strengthen aviation safety oversight and regulatory compliance across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The newly introduced platform is a centralized safety data management system designed to address gaps previously identified during audits by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), including fragmented safety data, weak reporting mechanisms, and inconsistencies in safety occurrence documentation across the industry.
Industry regulators say the system will significantly improve hazard reporting, safety data analysis, and regulatory monitoring, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming ICAO validation mission scheduled for April 2026.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held at the Authority’s Corporate Headquarters on March 16, 2026, the Director General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo, described the SMS Pro system as a critical technological tool for strengthening Nigeria’s aviation safety oversight architecture.
Najomo explained that the platform would support real-time safety data collection, occurrence reporting, risk assessment, and trend analysis across the aviation ecosystem. According to him, the system aligns with global aviation safety standards, particularly the requirements of ICAO Annex 19, which mandates the implementation of structured safety management systems by aviation authorities and service providers.
He noted that the deployment of SMS Pro would enhance the accuracy, accessibility, and timeliness of safety information within the sector, thereby enabling regulators to detect emerging risks early and respond more effectively to potential safety threats.
The NCAA boss further emphasized the importance of full implementation of the system ahead of the ICAO validation exercise, stressing that Nigeria must demonstrate strong compliance with international aviation safety standards.
The inauguration of SMS Pro marks a significant step in Nigeria’s commitment to adopting modern digital tools to improve aviation safety oversight and regulatory efficiency. Aviation stakeholders say the platform will also strengthen coordination between regulatory authorities and industry operators.
The system is expected to be deployed across the entire aviation industry, including airlines, airport authorities, aircraft maintenance organizations, aviation training institutions, and air navigation service providers, creating a unified national safety reporting and monitoring framework.
