Abia Traffic Lights Improved Road Safety, Reduce FRSC Workload
The installation of traffic lights at major intersections across Abia State has significantly improved traffic management, reduced accidents, and eased the workload of officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), according to officers and road users.
FRSC officials who spoke on the development said the traffic lights have transformed previously chaotic junctions into more orderly and safer areas for motorists and pedestrians.
One officer noted that the introduction of the traffic signals has made traffic control more efficient and less stressful for personnel.
According to the officer, road users now comply more with traffic regulations, reducing the need for manual traffic control at busy intersections.
Another FRSC official disclosed that accident rates at some monitored locations have dropped significantly since the installation of the lights.
He explained that no major accidents had been recorded at certain junctions where crashes were once common occurrences.
Despite the improvements, officials identified some lingering challenges, including motorists who become confrontational when cautioned for traffic violations.
They also expressed concern over some government officials who reportedly ignore traffic signals, particularly red lights.
To strengthen enforcement and improve compliance, FRSC officers recommended the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at strategic junctions to monitor traffic and identify offenders.
Motorists also commended the initiative, describing the traffic lights as a major improvement in traffic coordination and road discipline.
A driver interviewed said the roads have become more organised, with motorists now having a clearer understanding of when to stop and proceed.
However, observations at one intersection revealed occasional traffic disruptions caused by vehicles emerging from the Federal Medical Centre axis and obstructing other lanes even after traffic lights changed.
Pedestrians equally expressed relief over the improved traffic system, saying the roads are now safer and easier to cross.
One pedestrian stated that crossing busy roads was previously dangerous due to disorderly vehicle movement, but the traffic lights have restored order and improved safety for residents.
The development is widely seen as a positive step toward enhancing road safety and improving traffic flow across major roads in the state.
