LSPWC Intensifies Emergency Road Repairs Amid Persistent Rainfall
LAGOS — The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining roads across the state despite persistent rainfall, which has continued to affect road infrastructure and delay permanent repair works.
The General Manager of the Corporation, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, said the prolonged rains have accelerated the deterioration of several road sections while making it technically unsuitable to carry out lasting asphalt repairs.
He explained that permanent pavement works require dry weather to ensure durability, noting that the agency has instead prioritised emergency interventions, palliative repairs and other engineering measures to keep roads safe and motorable pending improved weather conditions.
Ajanaku said the situation reflects the impact of extreme weather being experienced in many cities globally, adding that Lagos is particularly vulnerable because much of the state lies below sea level, exposing its road network to groundwater pressure and prolonged flooding.
According to him, the Corporation has remained active across the state, carrying out maintenance works on roads in the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas over the past four weeks.
The interventions included sectional asphalt overlay on Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue in Eti-Osa and Ikorodu Road near Anthony Bus Stop, as well as maintenance works on Funsho Williams Avenue in Surulere.
The agency also deployed interlocking paving stones on Akilo Road in Agege, Ikorodu Road in Shomolu and Kodesoh Road in Ikeja. Palliative repairs using boulders were undertaken on Capitol Road by Alfa Nla and Old Abeokuta Road by the Market in Agege, Alaba International Road in Ojo, and Addo-Badore and Ogombo roads in Eti-Osa. Routine maintenance was also carried out along sections of Ikorodu Road within the Kosofe and Mushin axis.
The LSPWC boss commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat for their continued support in improving road infrastructure, citing the release of funds and enhanced inter-agency collaboration as key factors strengthening the agency’s response to road defects.
He also acknowledged the role of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, in providing technical guidance and strategic direction for road maintenance projects.
Ajanaku assured residents that engineers are monitoring road conditions daily and responding promptly to emerging defects, adding that comprehensive and permanent repairs would be accelerated once weather conditions become favourable.
He urged residents to support government efforts by avoiding activities that damage roads, including indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels, burning tyres on road surfaces, unauthorised road excavation, trading on road shoulders, spilling petroleum products and vandalising manhole covers.
He also encouraged members of the public to report damaged roads and related emergencies through the Corporation’s dedicated hotline for prompt attention.
