Police Reactivate Operation VELVET To Tackle Traffic Violations In Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command has reactivated Operation VELVET across the state’s 20 local government areas to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations and improve road safety.
The operation, directed by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is aimed at curbing traffic violations that endanger motorists and other road users, as well as activities that could create security risks along major highways and transit corridors.
According to a statement issued by the command on Thursday, the enforcement will focus on offences including driving against traffic, reckless and dangerous driving, unauthorised use of emergency sirens, and the use of missing, altered or concealed vehicle registration plates.
Other violations targeted under the operation include driving without a valid licence, overloading of vehicles and indiscriminate parking that obstructs the free flow of traffic.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of operational units to ensure effective implementation of the exercise in their respective areas.
Ojajuni also ordered that all personnel deployed for the operation be adequately briefed and closely supervised to ensure that enforcement is conducted professionally and in accordance with citizens’ fundamental rights.
He warned officers against abusing the exercise, stressing that Operation VELVET must not be used as a cover for extortion, illegal detention, harassment or unauthorised impoundment of vehicles and documents.
The commissioner further stated that officers found engaging in bribery, intimidation or other forms of professional misconduct would face disciplinary action under existing police regulations.
He also warned supervisory officers that they would be held responsible for the conduct of personnel under their command.
The command urged motorists, fleet operators and transport workers to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with officers during the enforcement exercise.
It equally advised members of the public not to offer bribes or other inducements to police officers in an attempt to evade sanctions.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babasuyi, said the command remained committed to implementing the operation professionally while seeking the cooperation of residents to promote safer roads across Ogun State.
The reactivation of Operation VELVET comes as the command intensifies traffic enforcement across the state, with particular attention to major highways and transit corridors.
