Flood Renders Ogun Road Impassable As Government Approves Reconstruction

Flooding has rendered parts of the Siun-Ogere-Iperu Road in Ogun State difficult to access, leaving motorists struggling to navigate the damaged sections of the major route.

The affected portion, located around the Ajura area, has suffered significant deterioration, with floodwater washing away sections of the carriageway and road edges.

The road, which connects the hometown of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to other parts of the state, has raised concerns among motorists over its worsening condition and the recurring failure of previous repairs to provide a lasting solution.

Some road users who spoke on the situation expressed frustration over the repeated deterioration of the route, despite several rehabilitation efforts.

A motorist identified as Quadri said the road was recently repaired ahead of the National Sports Festival but began to show signs of deterioration only a few weeks after the intervention.

Another motorist, Shola, attributed the recurring flooding to inadequate drainage infrastructure, pointing out that several streams and water channels run across the road.

Reacting to the development, the Ogun State Government said it was aware of the condition of the road and had approved its full reconstruction and realignment to address the persistent challenges.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, disclosed that the reconstruction would involve raising the road profile and constructing a larger box culvert to improve water flow and reduce the impact of flooding.

Akinmade explained that the repairs carried out before the National Sports Festival were temporary measures intended to improve the road’s condition ahead of the event. He added that the newly approved reconstruction was designed to provide a more permanent solution to the challenges affecting the route.

While awaiting the commencement of the reconstruction project, motorists continue to contend with flooded and damaged sections of the road, raising concerns about safety, accessibility and the impact of the deteriorating infrastructure on movement within the area.
