Okpebholo Applauds Tinubu’s Emergency Intervention On Benin-Asaba Road

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has commended President Bola Tinubu for ordering emergency intervention on the Benin-Asaba Road, expressing optimism that the move will ease prolonged traffic congestion and improve transportation along the 125-kilometre corridor.

Okpebholo, in a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, acknowledged the difficulties faced by motorists, commuters, residents and businesses as a result of the road’s deteriorating condition and persistent gridlock.

The governor said the President’s directive had renewed hope among affected communities, while thanking Tinubu for responding to concerns over the state of the critical highway.

“For a while now, I know the pain our people have endured on the Benin–Asaba Road. I have seen the gridlock, heard the frustrations of motorists and commuters, and understood the toll this situation has taken on families, businesses and communities,” Okpebholo said.

He also commended the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for his efforts towards restoring the road and addressing the challenges confronting road users.

According to the governor, he had directed contractors handling the emergency intervention to ensure that the work met quality standards, complied with approved specifications and was completed within the agreed timeframe.

Okpebholo stressed the need for the intervention to deliver tangible relief to residents and road users, noting that the hardship caused by the poor condition of the highway had persisted for too long.

“The hardship has gone on for too long. This intervention must bring meaningful relief to our people and restore safe, easier movement between Edo, Delta and other parts of the country,” he said.

The Federal Ministry of Works had earlier directed the immediate deployment of contractors to three sections of the Benin-Asaba Federal Road to repair failed portions and reduce the difficulties experienced by motorists.

The ministry also announced plans to redesign the entire route for reconstruction using reinforced concrete pavement, as part of efforts to provide a more durable solution to the road’s longstanding challenges.
