NPA To Sanction Traffic Offenders, Illegal Truck Parks At Lekki Port
The Nigerian Ports Authority has commenced moves to sanction stakeholders found violating the Port Standard Operating Procedures along the Lekki Port corridor.
The move is aimed at improving traffic management, enhancing safety and ensuring the smooth and efficient movement of cargo and trucks in and around the port.
The Port Manager, Lekki Port, Emmanuel Anda, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the port, where he warned that operators who contravene established rules and regulations would face appropriate sanctions.
Anda stressed that strict compliance with the Port Standard Operating Procedures was essential to maintaining order along the port access corridor and preventing activities capable of disrupting port operations.
He specifically warned against activities that could undermine the reputation and efficiency of Lekki Port, including traffic violations and the operation of illegal truck parks.
According to him, all stakeholders operating within the Lekki Port ecosystem must comply with approved procedures, as the authority would no longer overlook violations.
He said the port represented an important image-making platform for Nigeria and that no individual or group would be allowed to engage in activities capable of damaging the reputation of the Nigerian Ports Authority or the nation’s maritime sector.
The port manager also called for improved communication and coordination among stakeholders operating along the corridor to facilitate seamless port operations.
He urged the promoters of the electronic call-up system to integrate their technology with other relevant stakeholders to improve truck management and cargo evacuation.
Also speaking, an official of Call-up Technologies, Mike Idike, said the electronic system was ready to integrate with relevant stakeholders to facilitate seamless cargo evacuation and improve operational efficiency along the Lekki Port corridor.
Idike explained that the system had already been integrated with truck parks and operated in two stages.
He said the first stage required truck operators to make bookings through the Vehicle Booking System, while the second stage required trucks to check into an approved truck park before the Vehicle Booking System ticket could be printed.
The NPA’s latest position is expected to strengthen compliance with operational guidelines and improve traffic flow as activities at Lekki Port continue to expand.
