Lagos Plans Alcohol Sales Ban At Motor Parks To Curb Road Crashes

The Lagos State Government is considering a ban on the sale of sachet alcoholic drinks at motor parks across the state as part of efforts to curb reckless driving, reduce road crashes and improve public safety.

The Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with secretaries of the 57 local government areas and representatives of the Police Community Relations Committee.

Salu-Hundeyin said the proposed restriction was among measures being considered by the state government to strengthen security and enhance road safety, particularly during the Ember months, when travel activities and traffic volumes typically increase.

According to her, the government is concerned about the consumption of alcohol by commercial drivers at motor parks before embarking on journeys, a practice she said could endanger the lives of motorists, passengers and other road users.

She explained that the proposal had been presented to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during high-level security meetings, adding that the government was also conducting campaigns to discourage alcohol consumption among drivers.

The SSG noted that motor parks and garages were important areas of concern in the state’s security and transportation management efforts, stressing the need to prevent practices that could contribute to road accidents.

The proposed ban comes amid concerns over fatalities from road crashes in Lagos State.

Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had yet to release its 2026 road crash statistics as of the report, the Lagos State Sector Command disclosed that 91 people died in road crashes across the state between January and November 2025.

The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, provided the figure in December 2025 during a press briefing at the command’s office in Ojodu-Berger.

The briefing was organised to mark the annual Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign in partnership with the Beer Sectoral Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

The FRSC had also reported that 128 people lost their lives in 376 road crashes recorded in Lagos between January and October 2023.

The state government’s proposed restriction is expected to form part of broader efforts to promote responsible driving, improve compliance with road safety regulations and protect lives, particularly during periods of increased travel.
