APM Terminals Targets 2040 Net-Zero Goal With Lagos Port Clean-Up

APM Terminals Apapa has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible port operations with a large-scale clean-up exercise across key areas of the Lagos Port Complex (LPC).

The initiative, organised as part of the company’s 2026 Go Green Week, is aimed at supporting its global ambition of achieving net-zero operations by 2040.

Employees of APM Terminals Apapa cleaned major access roads within the port environment, covering areas from Finger Jetty through the common-user road to Eko Support Services, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Roundabout, Adekunle Road and the terminal’s main gate.

Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat, described Go Green Week as an important platform for promoting environmental awareness and collective action among members of the port community.

He said the clean-up demonstrated the company’s commitment to reducing waste, promoting environmental stewardship and supporting cleaner and more resilient ecosystems around Nigeria’s busiest port.

Alhraishat noted that employees across APM Terminals’ global network were being encouraged to translate environmental commitments into practical actions through activities such as clean-up campaigns, recycling, tree planting and habitat restoration.

He added that the participation of NPA employees in the exercise underscored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in maintaining a cleaner and more sustainable port environment.

The Health, Safety and Environment Manager of APM Terminals Apapa, Felix Ugwuagbo, said sustainability remained an integral part of the company’s operations and decision-making processes.

Ugwuagbo stressed that environmental responsibility must be incorporated into daily operations and embraced by all users of the port to achieve meaningful and lasting progress.

Also speaking, the Assistant Manager, NPA Environment, Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, Umar Ibrahim, commended APM Terminals for the initiative.

Ibrahim emphasised the importance of effective waste management in maintaining safe and efficient port operations, noting that a clean port environment protects public health, preserves the ecosystem and facilitates the smooth movement of people and cargo.

He added that prompt waste removal would help reduce environmental hazards, improve air quality and contribute to safer and more efficient operations for port users and other stakeholders.
