Bauchi Assembly Urges Govt To Construct 32km Rural Roads
The Bauchi State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently construct two rural roads spanning approximately 32 kilometres to improve transportation, boost agricultural and mining activities, and enhance access to essential services in affected communities.
The lawmakers made the call during plenary following separate motions sponsored by members representing Duguri/Gwana and Lame constituencies in Alkaleri and Toro Local Government Areas, respectively.
The first motion, sponsored by the member representing Duguri/Gwana Constituency, Hon. Bala Abdullahi Dan, focused on the approximately 17-kilometre Yalwan Duguri–Gayar–Mukal–Darma–Kunkar–Mumbana–Kumbala road.
Presenting the motion, Dan said the road connected several densely populated agrarian communities whose residents depended largely on crop production, livestock rearing, and other rural economic activities.
He noted that the poor condition of the road had subjected residents to severe transportation challenges, particularly during the rainy season when sections of the route became inaccessible.
According to him, the deteriorating road had hindered the transportation of farm produce, increased logistics costs, contributed to post-harvest losses, and negatively affected the earnings of farmers and traders in the communities.
The lawmaker added that the infrastructure deficit had also limited residents’ access to healthcare facilities, schools, markets, and other essential social amenities.
Dan maintained that the continued neglect of the road had constrained commercial activities, discouraged investment, and contributed to rural poverty despite the economic potential of the communities along the corridor.
He cited Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which states that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government, stressing the importance of critical infrastructure in achieving the constitutional objective.
The lawmaker said constructing the road would facilitate the movement of agricultural produce to urban markets, stimulate commerce, improve access to social services, strengthen security operations, and promote integration among the affected communities.
