Bodo-Bonny Link Road To Cost N150bn – Umahi
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has disclosed that the proposed 8.9-kilometre dual carriageway linking Bodo–Bonny Road to the East–West Road will cost an estimated N150 billion.
Umahi made this known in Abuja while receiving the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, Mr Adeleye Falade, during a courtesy visit to the ministry.
According to the minister, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the dualisation of the road, which will be constructed using concrete technology to ensure durability. The project will feature two flyovers, solar-powered streetlights, tree planting, rest areas, and modern surveillance systems, including CCTV for enhanced monitoring.
He explained that the new phase of the project is designed to connect the already completed Bodo–Bonny Road to the East–West Road, a critical transport corridor in the Niger Delta region, thereby improving the movement of people and goods.
Umahi noted that the difficult terrain and additional infrastructure components contributed to the high cost estimate. He added that the federal government intends to complete the project within 12 months without any variation in contract price, stressing that Julius Berger is being considered to continue the work due to its presence on site.
The minister further revealed that savings from the initial Bodo–Bonny Road project had been reinvested into improving the corridor through the installation of solar lighting and environmental enhancements such as tree planting.
He reiterated the administration’s commitment to constructing long-lasting road infrastructure capable of serving for 50 to 100 years with minimal maintenance, while also improving road safety and boosting economic activities.
In his remarks, Falade commended the federal government for its support on the Bodo–Bonny Road project, noting that it has significantly reduced travel time between Port Harcourt and Bonny Island from about four hours to approximately one and a half hours.
He expressed appreciation for the progress made and affirmed NLNG’s readiness to collaborate with the government on the new linking road project to maximise the benefits of the existing infrastructure.
