FG Launches Pilot Scheme For 100 Electric Buses To Ease Transport Burden On Civil Servants
The Federal Government has inaugurated a nine-member committee to oversee the pilot implementation of the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Bus Scheme designed to reduce transportation costs and ease commuting challenges for Federal Civil Servants.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mr Olumuyiwa Enitan Abel, inaugurated the Pilot Implementation Committee in Abuja, describing the initiative as part of the government’s efforts to improve workers’ welfare and create an enabling environment for greater productivity.
Enitan commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers, noting that the provision of 100 electric mass transit buses was a practical demonstration of the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.
According to him, the pilot phase of the scheme will commence with 10 electric buses operating on selected routes before the full deployment of the 100 buses.
The HCSF charged the committee to ensure a seamless commencement of the pilot scheme, stressing the importance of urgency, transparency, innovation and accountability in the implementation process.
He also urged the committee to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic bottlenecks that could delay the commencement of the transportation service.
The Director, Press and Public Relations, Mrs Eno Olotu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Enitan expressed appreciation to the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Otunba Oluwemimo Osanipin, and his management team for their collaboration towards the initiative.
He said the pilot phase would provide the government with practical experience needed to assess and refine the scheme before deploying the remaining buses.
The HCSF expressed confidence that the initiative would eventually establish a sustainable staff transportation model for the Federal Public Service.
Under the committee’s Terms of Reference, members are expected to develop an implementation framework, identify suitable routes, establish a transparent enrolment and payment system, and recommend affordable fares for users.
The committee is also expected to ensure adequate safety, security and accessibility for all beneficiaries, including persons living with disabilities.
The committee is chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Dr Abdul Sule Garba, while Mr Nura Umar, representing NADDC, serves as Co-Chairperson.
Other members include Arc. Joy Baderin, Director, IMD; Mr Emmanuel Agodi, Deputy Director, EIR; Mr Gbenga Olowoyo, representative of JNPSNC; Mrs Joke Onireti of NADDC; Mr Bright Idehenre of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund; and Mrs Bimbo Ayere of NADDC.
Mrs Chinyere Nwosu, CAO, EIR, serves as Member/Secretary.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Garba thanked the HCSF for the confidence reposed in the members and assured him that they would work closely with relevant stakeholders to deliver an efficient, safe, transparent and sustainable transportation system for Federal Civil Servants.
The electric buses were launched and commissioned on August 26, 2026, under the Renewed Hope Transit Programme, paving the way for the pilot phase of the initiative.
The outcome of the pilot is expected to guide the effective deployment of the remaining buses and help the Federal Government establish a long-term mass transit system for workers across the Federal Public Service.
