Gas Pipeline Fire Erupts Along Agege Motor Road, Lagos Mobilises Emergency Response
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has activated a full-scale emergency response following a gas pipeline fire along Agege Motor Road at Ile Zik inward Agege in the early hours of Monday.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Lagos State Government, the agency disclosed that its Eagle Response Team arrived at the scene at about 3:13 a.m. after receiving distress calls through the state’s 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines.
According to the agency, responders discovered that a gas pipeline belonging to Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited was engulfed in flames upon arrival.
Authorities said the cause of the fire had yet to be determined, adding that investigations were ongoing in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and safety officials of NNPCL.
LASEMA, however, confirmed that no casualty or injury had been recorded as of the time of filing the report.
The agency attributed the outcome to the swift deployment of emergency responders who immediately commenced evacuation and secured the area to prevent harm to residents, motorists and businesses within the axis.
Emergency officials said a coordinated multi-agency operation was ongoing at the scene, involving the LASEMA Eagle Response Team, LASEMA Response Unit firefighters and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The responders were said to have established containment lines to prevent the inferno from spreading to nearby residential buildings, fuel stations and other critical infrastructure, while traffic officials implemented diversion measures to reduce congestion and ensure public safety.
Speaking on the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, assured residents that the situation was under control and that the state’s emergency response plans had been fully activated.
He said the protection of lives and property remained the government’s top priority, noting that the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu had invested heavily in emergency preparedness and rapid response systems.
Oke-Osanyintolu further disclosed that the Lagos State Government was working closely with NNPCL to safely isolate the affected pipeline, adding that a comprehensive integrity audit would be conducted before the facility is reactivated after the fire is extinguished.
The government advised residents and motorists to avoid the Agege Motor Road corridor until further notice, urging commuters to make use of alternative routes including Old Abeokuta Road and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Authorities also appealed to residents not to engage in panic buying of petroleum products, assuring the public that there was no immediate threat to fuel supply within Lagos.
The state government urged residents to report any suspicious activity or acts of vandalism around pipeline infrastructure through the emergency numbers 767 or 112.
LASEMA added that periodic updates on the incident would be provided through its verified communication channels, while a post-incident assessment report would be released after the situation had been fully brought under control and investigations concluded.
