OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Lagos State Government has intensified consultations with residents and key stakeholders ahead of the commencement of improvement works at the Turnbull–Parkview intersections along Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, with construction scheduled to begin on September 14, 2026.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held on Thursday at Banana Island Estate, Ikoyi, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the project is designed to ease persistent traffic congestion at the strategic intersections and improve vehicular movement within the Ikoyi axis.

Osiyemi appealed to residents, estate associations and other stakeholders to support the initiative, stressing that collaboration would be essential to ensuring the successful and timely completion of the project.

According to the commissioner, the junction improvement works are expected to last six months and will focus on eliminating traffic bottlenecks while enhancing the overall efficiency of the road network in the area.

He assured stakeholders that the Ministry of Transportation would work closely with utility providers and relevant agencies to prevent disruptions to critical services, including electricity, water supply, fibre optic infrastructure and other public utilities throughout the construction period.

The commissioner also disclosed that observations and concerns raised during the engagement session would be carefully reviewed before contractors move to the project site.

To minimise inconvenience to motorists and residents, Osiyemi said a comprehensive traffic management plan would be implemented throughout the construction period. He added that major construction activities would be scheduled during off-peak hours in the mornings and evenings to reduce traffic disruptions.

He further assured affected property owners that the government had developed an appropriate compensation framework for cases where the project’s right-of-way encroaches on private properties.

Providing technical details of the project, the Director of Transport Engineering at the Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Bolaji Bada, explained that the Turnbull and Parkview intersections serve as critical links to major roads within Ikoyi and regularly experience severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak periods.

He said the planned intervention is expected to eliminate bottlenecks, improve intersection efficiency and ensure smoother traffic flow for motorists.

Speaking on behalf of residents, the Chairman of Parkview Estate, Mrs. Ronke Shokefun, urged the government to maintain continuous engagement with residents throughout the execution of the project, while highlighting existing traffic challenges within the estate.

Similarly, the Chairman of Banana Island Estate, Mr. Shonaiki Abidemi, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would significantly improve traffic circulation in the area. He encouraged residents to cooperate with the government to facilitate the successful delivery of the project.

The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by representatives of the project contractor, Infrapoint Concept Limited, Julius Berger, officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, telecommunications service providers, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), the Lagos State Water Corporation, and other Ministries, Departments and Agencies involved in the project.
