Lagos Begins Stakeholders’ Engagement On Ikotun Junction Road Upgrade

The Lagos State Government has commenced consultations with stakeholders ahead of the planned improvement of the Ikotun Junction, covering the Ijegun Road, Isolo Road and Idimu Road intersection.

The intervention is aimed at addressing persistent traffic congestion in the Ikotun axis while improving road connectivity, mobility and the overall physical environment.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area Secretariat, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, described the engagement as an important step towards the successful implementation of the project.

Olumide said the proposed works would improve accessibility, ease traffic congestion and create a more organised environment for movement and commercial activities.

He, however, stressed the need for proper management of informal spaces within the project area after completion to prevent uncoordinated activities from undermining the benefits of the intervention.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Olawale Musa, identified roadside trading and other unregulated commercial activities as major contributors to the persistent congestion along the Ikotun axis.

Osiyemi assured stakeholders whose properties or legitimate interests may be affected by the project that they would receive adequate compensation in accordance with applicable government policies.

He urged affected residents, community leaders and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government to ensure the smooth and timely execution of the project.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Mr Olayinka Wasiu, appealed to residents and other stakeholders to work with the government and project consultants, noting that their cooperation was essential to completing the intervention within the expected timeframe.

The Chairman of Igando/Ikotun LCDA, Comrade Lasisi Akinsanya, commended the state government for the initiative, describing it as a timely response to the transportation and environmental challenges facing the community.

The Onikotun of Ikotun Kingdom, Oba Azeez Asiwaju, also welcomed the proposed project and pledged the support of the traditional institution and residents.

Stakeholders at the meeting raised concerns and offered recommendations on how to minimise disruption during construction.

The state government said the intervention was part of its broader efforts to improve traffic management, enhance mobility and promote orderly physical development across Lagos.

The meeting was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, traders, residents and representatives of host communities.
