Lagos To Shut Eko Bridge Section For Repairs, Safety Checks Tuesday

The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of a section of the Eko Bridge outbound to Lagos Island for safety investigations and repair works beginning Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the affected section stretches from Apongbon to Ijora Olopa.

According to the commissioner, the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists throughout the repair period.

Osiyemi advised road users heading toward Lagos Island to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge and other alternative routes to ease traffic congestion during the closure.

He added that traffic management and security personnel would be deployed across diversion points and adjoining roads to ensure smooth vehicular movement and maintain order.

The development follows the Federal Government’s recent directive ordering the immediate closure of a section of the Eko Bridge as reconstruction work begins on the Carter Bridge in Lagos.

Speaking during the project handover ceremony on Lagos Island last week, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed that underwater structural assessments conducted on major bridges in Lagos uncovered serious defects in some supporting infrastructure.

Umahi stated that inspections carried out since 2013, alongside recent evaluations, showed that some supporting piles beneath the Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge had shifted, raising safety concerns.

Eko Bridge is one of the three major bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, alongside Carter Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge.
