LAMATA, NULGE Strengthen Partnership To Safeguard Lagos BRT System

The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to improved urban mobility following a strategic meeting with the leadership of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).

The meeting, held in Lagos, brought together key stakeholders to explore ways of strengthening institutional collaboration and enhancing the efficiency of the state’s transport system. The NULGE delegation was led by its state chairman, Comrade Sunday Ogunfowora.

Speaking during the engagement, Engr. Akinajo reflected on the evolution of LAMATA, noting that its vision—conceived during the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu when he served as Governor of Lagos State—remains relevant and continues to guide the agency’s operations.

She emphasized the critical role of civic responsibility in sustaining transport infrastructure, particularly the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. According to her, the BRT corridors are specifically designed for high-capacity buses to ensure the smooth, safe, and efficient movement of large numbers of commuters across the city.

“The BRT lanes are meant to prioritize mass transit and improve mobility across the city. Compliance with established transport regulations is essential for achieving this goal,” she stated.

Engr. Akinajo called on NULGE and its members to support ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of the BRT system, stressing that adherence to traffic rules is vital for maintaining order and maximizing the benefits of public transport investments.

In his remarks, Comrade Ogunfowora commended LAMATA for its role in transforming Lagos’ transport landscape and assured the agency of the union’s readiness to collaborate in promoting compliance and awareness among local government workers.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing a shared commitment to building stronger partnerships that will enhance transport regulation, improve commuter experience, and deliver lasting benefits to public sector workers and residents of Lagos State.
