LASDRI Holds ‘Train-the-Trainer’ Workshop To Boost Road Safety, Capacity Of Driving Instructors

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

The Lagos State Driver’s Institute (LASDRI) has reiterated its commitment to improving road safety and reducing traffic accidents through continuous training and retraining of driving instructors across the state.

Speaking at the fifth edition of the institute’s annual “Train-the-Trainer” workshop, the General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, said the programme was designed to equip instructors with modern teaching techniques and updated knowledge required to enhance service delivery.

Tiamiyu stressed that safety remains central to transportation management, noting that the agency plays a critical role in ensuring that drivers are properly trained before being certified to operate on Lagos roads.

According to her, “Our responsibility is to bring drivers back to the classroom for training, retraining and recertification. What we aim to achieve is zero accidents and zero crashes on our roads.

This can only be possible when instructors are well-equipped with the right knowledge and skills.” She emphasised.

Adding that the training aligns with the transportation and traffic management pillar of the government’s development agenda, while stressing that empowering instructors would translate to better-trained drivers and safer roads.

The LASDRI boss explained that the workshop, themed around empowering instructors with essential tools for quality service delivery, is also aimed at strengthening internal capacity and promoting uniform standards in driver education.

“Only what you have can be delivered. That is why we continue to invest in training our instructors so they can effectively impart knowledge to drivers,” she said.

Also speaking, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Oki-Bakare, represented by Mr. Jubrin Oshodi, highlighted the importance of mobility to economic and social development, describing it as “non-negotiable.”

He, however, emphasized that safety must take precedence in all mobility-related activities.

“Mobility does not exist in isolation. It comes with a very important element, which is safety. As trainers, your role is crucial because you shape the consciousness of drivers and the public on responsible road use,” he said.

Oshodi urged instructors to continually upgrade their knowledge and remain in tune with global best practices, noting that their role directly impacts public safety and societal development.

He further described the relationship between LASTMA and LASDRI as collaborative, stating that both agencies work closely to achieve a safe and efficient traffic system in the state.

“As partners, we are like twins. Training and traffic management go hand in hand in ensuring orderliness and compliance on our roads,” he added.

In a related development, health professionals at the event also educated participants on lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, stressing the need for regular health checks and healthy living.

A nurse from Janelle Wellness Organisation, Oyeyemi Mofiyinfoluwa, disclosed that hypertension remains a major public health concern, with statistics indicating that one in four Nigerian adults is affected.

She noted that sedentary lifestyles, excessive salt intake, and poor diet contribute significantly to the condition, advising participants to adopt regular exercise and healthier eating habits.

Another health practitioner, Adefamo Rhoda, highlighted the dangers of unmanaged diabetes, warning that it could lead to severe complications such as kidney failure, stroke, and heart disease if not properly controlled.

The LASDRI training programme featured technical sessions focusing on transitioning instructors into facilitators, improving communication skills, and enhancing effective service delivery.

Participants were encouraged to actively engage in the sessions and adopt innovative teaching methods that would improve driver education and ultimately contribute to safer roads across Lagos State.
