LASTMA Records 38,000 Traffic Violations Through Digital Enforcement In Three Months

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it detected about 38,000 traffic violations across the state through its technology-driven enforcement system during the second quarter of 2026, highlighting the growing role of digital surveillance in traffic management.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Lagos on Sunday. He also revealed that more than 3,000 motorists were apprehended through conventional enforcement operations within the same period.

According to Bakare-Oki, field officers focused on offences that disrupt the free flow of traffic, including indiscriminate parking, failure to use designated bus stops, driving against traffic, illegal use of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, and non-compliance with seat belt regulations.

He explained that the agency is gradually shifting from manual enforcement to technology-based monitoring, a move that has significantly improved its ability to detect traffic offenders.

“LASTMA is moving from physical enforcement to technology-driven enforcement, which explains why more traffic violations were captured through technology in the second quarter of the year,” he said.

Bakare-Oki noted that once sufficient evidence is obtained through the agency’s Traffic Management Solution devices, offending vehicle owners are served court papers for prosecution.

He explained that all traffic cases are handled by the Lagos State Mobile Court, which has the legal authority to convict offenders or impose fines.

According to him, motorists who choose not to appear before the court after receiving court papers may opt for a waiver through LASTMA’s Legal Department after paying the prescribed penalty, although the agency encourages offenders to appear in court to ensure a fair hearing.

The LASTMA boss urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, stressing that compliance is essential to improving road safety and easing traffic congestion across Lagos.

Bakare-Oki also disclosed that the Lagos State Government has commenced a coordinated enforcement and environmental cleanup operation along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway following a directive by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He said the exercise involves multiple government agencies, including LASTMA, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), the IRS Task Force, and the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment.

According to him, the operation, which began last week, is aimed at clearing refuse, removing abandoned vehicles, and eliminating other obstructions along the major transport corridor to improve traffic flow and restore order.
