LASTMA Rescues Critical Hit-and-Run Victim In Ojota

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a critically injured victim of a hit-and-run crash at Ojota, Lagos.

The incident occurred over the weekend along the main carriageway from Ketu inward Ojota, where an unidentified motorist reportedly knocked down the victim and fled the scene.

According to LASTMA, officers who arrived at the scene found the victim lying in a pool of blood with multiple traumatic injuries, including severe fractures and a serious head injury.

The officers immediately secured the area, managed traffic and took measures to protect the victim and other road users from further danger.

LASTMA subsequently contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), whose medical team arrived at the scene to assess the injured victim.

The medical personnel reportedly expressed concern over the severity of the injuries and the need to move the victim to a specialised trauma facility for further treatment.

The officers remained at the scene while efforts were made to secure appropriate emergency medical intervention.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the alleged abandonment of the victim by the fleeing motorist, describing the action as irresponsible and unacceptable.

Bakare-Oki said motorists involved in crashes have both a moral and legal responsibility to stop, assess the situation, contact emergency responders and, where possible, assist injured persons.

He said fleeing a crash scene, particularly when another person has sustained life-threatening injuries, could have devastating consequences.

The LASTMA boss commended the officers involved in the rescue operation for their courage and professionalism, noting that the agency’s responsibilities extend beyond traffic management to emergency response and the protection of lives at crash scenes.

He appealed to eyewitnesses and members of the public with credible information that could help identify the fleeing motorist to provide such information to law enforcement authorities.

LASTMA also urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding, reckless driving and other dangerous practices capable of endangering other road users.

The agency advised members of the public to promptly report road crashes and other emergencies by calling its toll-free hotline, 3367, or contacting the relevant emergency-response agencies.
