MARCON, MWUN Strengthen Partnership To Drive Maritime Industry Growth

The Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have renewed their commitment to strengthening collaboration towards the growth and development of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy sector.

The commitment was made on Tuesday when the President of MARCON, Ismail Aniemu, led members of the organisation’s executive to pay a courtesy visit to the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu.

Aniemu said the relationship between both organisations remained critical to the development of the maritime industry, noting that a strong, united and well-supported workforce was essential to the sector’s progress.

He commended the MWUN leadership for the achievements recorded under its administration, particularly the progress made through Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), which he described as significant milestones capable of improving the welfare of maritime workers and their families.

According to him, the union has continued to make progress in advancing the interests of its members and promoting better conditions for maritime workers.

Aniemu assured the union of MARCON’s continued support, particularly through professional, balanced and factual reportage aimed at highlighting the achievements of MWUN while also drawing public attention to challenges affecting maritime workers and the wider industry.

He also informed the MWUN leadership about MARCON’s forthcoming conference on sustainable fishing in Nigeria, scheduled to hold on September 30, 2026, at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos.

Responding, Bunu commended MARCON for what he described as its professionalism and courage in reporting developments in the maritime sector without fear or favour.

He praised the organisation for its commitment to presenting issues objectively and holding stakeholders accountable through responsible journalism.

Bunu said MWUN would continue to prioritise the welfare and interests of its members, stressing that protecting workers and improving their conditions remained central to the responsibilities of the union

He maintained that the primary duty of a workers’ union was to speak for, defend and protect the interests of its members.

The MWUN leader also urged journalists to remain factual, courageous and committed to their professional responsibilities, saying accurate reporting was essential to nation-building.

He assured MARCON of MWUN’s continued cooperation, adding that the union remained open to further collaboration with the organisation in advancing the interests of the maritime sector.
