Motorists Raise Alarm Over Abandoned Truck, Accidents On Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

Motorists plying the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway have raised concerns over an abandoned heavy-duty truck obstructing the highway around 9th Mile Corner, describing the situation as a serious threat to road users.

The truck, which reportedly broke down about five days ago, has remained on the expressway, allegedly causing traffic congestion and contributing to multiple accidents in the area.

The incident occurred close to the site of the international motor parts market being constructed by the Enugu State Government.

A motorist, Uchenna Eze, who spoke on Wednesday evening, said the obstruction had created a dangerous situation for motorists and had reportedly resulted in several accidents, with some road users sustaining injuries.

According to him, the truck’s presence on the busy highway has also caused significant traffic gridlock, worsening the difficulties faced by motorists.

Eze urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Enugu State Government to urgently remove the abandoned truck and restore the free flow of traffic.

He said, “This is a very bad situation. The place where the truck broke down is very dangerous and it has been causing accidents.

“Today, being Wednesday, there were multiple accidents and a lot of people were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The FRSC mounts a road checkpoint close to here, and I don’t know why they have not enforced the removal of the truck from the expressway to allow free flow of traffic.”

He further appealed to the authorities to act swiftly to prevent further accidents and protect travellers using the expressway.

Efforts to obtain the reaction of the FRSC were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
