NADDC Assures Nigerians Of Safety Of Certified CNG Conversions
The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has reassured Nigerians of the safety of properly certified Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversions following an incident involving a CNG-retrofitted Toyota Camry in Abuja.
The incident occurred on September 13, 2026, at a NIPCO Gas Filling Station along Airport Road, Abuja. According to the Council, no fatalities or injuries were recorded.
The NADDC said investigations into the incident were ongoing, but preliminary findings suggested that the affected vehicle may have been fitted with an additional cylinder that was neither approved nor suitable for CNG use.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Council said it was working with relevant authorities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and strengthen regulatory oversight, compliance monitoring and public safety standards governing CNG conversion activities nationwide.
The Council emphasised that CNG vehicle conversions must be carried out using approved components and by qualified professionals at certified conversion centres. It added that converted vehicles must undergo proper testing and regular maintenance in line with established safety standards.
NADDC urged motorists to patronise only certified CNG conversion centres and ensure that approved components are used during the conversion process.
It also warned vehicle owners against unauthorised modifications to CNG systems, noting that such alterations could compromise safety and undermine the standards established for CNG mobility.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting motorists and members of the public while providing the necessary regulatory framework for the safe and sustainable expansion of CNG-powered transportation in Nigeria.
NADDC further urged Nigerians to rely on verified information concerning CNG systems and conversions, rather than unverified reports that could create unnecessary concerns about properly certified CNG vehicles.
