NCAA, Nigerian Army Partner To Strengthen Aviation Security With Canine Operations

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Army have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening canine security operations and enhancing aviation security at airports and other critical aviation infrastructure across the country.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony held at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Barracks, Asokoro, Abuja.

Under the partnership, both organisations will collaborate on the deployment, training, and development of canine units for aviation security.

The agreement also provides for the Nigerian Army to qualify canine trainers and handlers, while the NCAA will license the personnel and train its aviation security inspectors.

Representing the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, the NCAA’s Director of Aviation Security, Dr. Ben Omogo, described canine operations as an essential component of modern aviation security, particularly in addressing emerging security threats.

Omogo commended the Nigerian Army for its partnership and commitment to strengthening security within Nigeria’s aviation sector, noting that the collaboration would enhance the country’s aviation security framework in line with international standards.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Provost Marshal (Army), Major General M.O. Erebulu, described canine units as a critical force multiplier in security operations. He said trained military dogs and their handlers significantly improve capabilities in explosive detection, tracking, and search operations.

Erebulu added that the partnership demonstrates the shared commitment of both institutions to safeguarding the nation’s aviation sector through professionalism and adherence to global best practices. He also praised the NCAA for its determination in bringing the initiative to fruition.

Also speaking, the NCAA’s Director of Corporate Services, Dr. Rebecca Eyiuche, described the MoU as a strategic milestone that would deepen institutional collaboration, promote knowledge transfer, and ensure the long-term sustainability of aviation security operations.

The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation between the NCAA and the Nigerian Army while improving the capacity of canine units to support aviation security and protect critical airport infrastructure nationwide.
