One Killed in Multiple Trailer Crash at Otedola Bridge as LASTMA Implements Emergency Traffic Diversion
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
A fatal multiple-vehicle accident involving articulated trucks occurred on Wednesday at Otedola Bridge, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the death of a trailer driver and severe traffic disruption in the area.
The incident, which involved two heavy-duty trailers—one conveying sand and the other loaded with granite—was reportedly caused by a contest for right of way. The collision led to the entrapment of the driver of the sand-laden trailer, who sustained fatal injuries.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Rescue Team, who were on routine patrol, responded promptly to the emergency.
The trapped driver was extricated and handed over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), who transported him to the General Hospital, Ikeja, where he was confirmed dead. The driver of the second trailer was rescued alive and reportedly escaped without injury.
Further compounding the situation, another trailer fully loaded with flour overturned about 50 metres from the primary crash site, worsening traffic congestion along the already affected corridor.
Security personnel from the Alausa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene to ensure public safety, provide security cover, and assist with crowd control and rescue operations.
The combined incidents obstructed nearly 80 per cent of the carriageway, necessitating extensive traffic management and diversion measures.
Motorists travelling into Lagos from the Mowe, Kara Bridge and Redemption Camp axis were diverted through the Ojodu–Olole route, linking Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat and 7-Up, to access Gbagada and Ojota.
Commenting on the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, described the crashes as unfortunate and largely avoidable.
He attributed the accidents to impatience, indiscipline and the failure of some drivers—particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles—to observe traffic rules and yield appropriately.
Hon. Giwa stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations and mutual respect among road users remain critical to preventing avoidable crashes and loss of life. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased driver and prayed for strength to bear the loss.
He also commended the prompt and coordinated response of LASTMA operatives, LASAMBUS personnel and security agencies for their professionalism in managing the emergency and restoring order.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and urged all motorists, especially operators of articulated vehicles, to exercise restraint, professionalism and strict compliance with traffic laws to protect lives and property across the state.
