Otti Names Umuahia Bus Terminal After INEC Returning Officer
Governor Alex Otti has commissioned the newly constructed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and named the facility after Professor Nnenna Oti, the former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer who declared him winner of the 2023 Abia governorship election.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Umuahia on Wednesday, Governor Otti said the decision to name the terminal after Professor Oti was in recognition of her courage, integrity and commitment to democracy during the 2023 election.
According to him, Professor Oti, alongside other INEC officials and security personnel, resisted bribery, intimidation and attempts to manipulate the election results.
“This terminal has been named after Professor Nnenna Nnannaya Oti, an INEC officer, for her courage and sacrifice,” the governor stated.
Otti explained that the bus terminal was established to improve safety and restore order in transportation operations within Umuahia, while also ensuring the smooth flow of traffic across the city.
The governor added that the project would create economic opportunities for transport operators and contribute to the growth of the state’s economy.
As part of activities marking the event, Governor Otti also commissioned several road projects in the state.
In her remarks, Professor Oti, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, maintained that she acted in accordance with the law by declaring Otti winner of the election.
“I stood, and I still stand, that votes must count. The wish of the people must count. I simply did the right thing, and I want Nigeria to do the right thing,” she said.
