Sanwo-Olu Pays N3bn Compensation To 331 Residents Affected By Lagos Road Projects
LAGOS — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented compensation cheques worth N3 billion to 331 residents whose land and properties were acquired for major road infrastructure projects across the state.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday, the governor said the compensation underscores his administration’s commitment to balancing infrastructure development with fairness and respect for the rights of affected citizens.
Sanwo-Olu said the beneficiaries, identified as Project Affected Persons (PAPs), had their claims subjected to a comprehensive verification process, including enumeration, ownership confirmation and professional valuation by certified estate surveyors, to ensure that only legitimate claimants received compensation.
He described the exercise as a demonstration of responsible governance, stressing that whenever government acquires land for public purposes under the Land Use Act, it has a legal and moral obligation to compensate affected property owners promptly and fairly.
According to the governor, the road projects are designed to improve transportation, reduce traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, stimulate commerce and unlock economic opportunities across Lagos State.
While acknowledging the sacrifices made by affected residents, Sanwo-Olu thanked them for their cooperation, noting that their contributions would help shape a more prosperous and sustainable Lagos for future generations.
He urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the compensation by investing in productive ventures, rebuilding their lives and securing the future of their families.
The governor also assured residents whose compensation claims are still undergoing verification that no genuine claimant would be left out, while warning that fraudulent claims would not be tolerated.
Sanwo-Olu commended officials of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, estate surveyors, valuers, engineers, town planners and community leaders for ensuring that the compensation process was conducted with transparency, professionalism and integrity.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure while protecting the rights and welfare of Lagos residents, stating that the government is not only building roads but also strengthening public trust through responsible governance.
