Two Containers Fall As Truck Overturns On Otedola Bridge, LASTMA Restores Traffic Flow
OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that a Mack articulated truck conveying two 20-foot containers overturned along the Otedola Bridge corridor in Lagos after developing a mechanical fault.
According to the authority, the truck reportedly experienced a battery-related problem while in transit, leaving the vehicle immobilised on the road.
During an attempt by private operators to recover the faulty truck, the operation went wrong, causing the vehicle to overturn and the containers to fall onto the roadway.
The incident resulted in a partial obstruction of the carriageway, disrupting traffic movement along the busy corridor.
LASTMA officials said no casualties were recorded, noting that the situation was quickly brought under control following the prompt intervention of the agency’s operatives in collaboration with other emergency response teams.
Upon receiving a distress alert, the LASTMA Rescue and Recovery Team immediately mobilised to the scene alongside personnel from the agency’s Zone 2 Command.
The team initiated coordinated traffic control measures to safeguard motorists and prevent secondary accidents.
To enable swift clearance of the obstruction, the authority temporarily closed the main carriageway of the expressway inbound Lagos.
A high-capacity tow truck was deployed to the scene, while a heavy-duty crane was engaged to lift and reposition the fallen containers, allowing for a safe and organised recovery operation.
The incident triggered a traffic backlog that stretched beyond the Kara Bridge area as motorists approaching the axis encountered congestion.
However, LASTMA personnel were actively engaged in traffic diversion, vehicle regulation and crowd control, which helped ease the congestion and restore order to traffic movement within the area.
Following the successful recovery and removal of the overturned truck and its containers, the authority reopened the main carriageway and normal traffic flow was gradually restored.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, also deployed additional personnel to the scene to support other emergency responders and ensure effective traffic management during the operation.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding critical road infrastructure and ensuring safe and seamless mobility across Lagos road networks.
